Newsletters are mostly words that have to fit

The hard part of a school or club newsletter is not the design. It is getting a principal’s note, a calendar, three announcements, and a thank-you into two pages without cutting anything. BrochureBoss uses linked text frames for this: write the story once, chain the columns together, and the text flows from one to the next, onto the next page if needed. Resize a column and the text redistributes, and a red marker shows when there is more text than room.

A table makes a calendar or a lunch schedule: add rows and columns, shade the header, and type straight into each cell. Master pages hold the repeating header and the page numbers, which renumber when you move pages.

Templates to start from

Start from a template, or import last year’s newsletter.

  • Newsletter

Two pages with a masthead, a rule, and a story that flows through four linked columns, plus a master page.

  • Event flyer

Big type and a gradient banner for a fundraiser, a book fair, or a sign-up drive.

  • Letterhead

Header and footer on a master page, for letters on the school or club name.

  • Mailing labels

Thirty per sheet, with merge fields ready for a family or member list.

  • Postcard

6 x 4 inches with merge fields, for reminders and invitations.

Letters home, one copy per family

Load a CSV, insert fields such as first name, then step through the records on screen before you print. The app warns you about fields with no matching column, and runs one printed copy per record, up to 500 per print run. Check runs spelling and flags low-resolution pictures before the copy shop sees the file.

Because every project downloads as a .bboss file you keep, the newsletter does not depend on one person’s computer or login. It runs in a modern browser on Windows, Mac, or a Chromebook.

A newsletter in three steps

  1. Start from the template or import

Choose Newsletter, or bring in an old Publisher newsletter with Import .pub.

  2. Write the stories

Type or paste into the first column. Link frames so the text continues, and use bulleted lists for announcements.

  3. Check and print

Run Check, then Print / PDF and Save as PDF. Print copies, or share the PDF.

Straight talk: BrochureBoss makes printed and PDF newsletters. It is not an email newsletter service: it does not send mail or manage subscribers. Colors are RGB, and tables cannot flow across linked frames or merge cells yet.

Questions

  • Can I make a school or club newsletter in BrochureBoss?

Yes. The Newsletter template has two pages, a masthead, and a story that flows through four linked columns. You can also build your own from text frames.

  • Can text flow from one column to the next?

Yes. Link one text frame to another and the story pours through the chain, across pages if you want. A red marker shows when there is more text than room.

  • Can I make a calendar or schedule?

Yes. Use a table: add rows and columns, shade a header row, set the grid, and type into any cell. Tables cannot merge cells or flow across linked frames yet.

  • Can I send a letter home to every family?

Yes. Load a CSV, insert fields into the letter, preview the records, and print one copy per record, up to 500 per print run.

  • Can I open our old Publisher newsletters?

Yes. Use Import .pub and the file opens as an editable layout. It is an approximation, and the app lists what it could not bring across. Read a Microsoft Publisher alternative.

  • Do we need to install anything?

No. It runs in your browser, and you can install it from the browser so it opens like an app. Download the .bboss file to keep a copy on your own computer.
